Parenting secrets: our tips to keep your children's clothes looking new
Children grow up fast, but that doesn't mean their clothes have to be short-lived. By taking the right steps, it's possible to keep clothes in excellent condition, for reuse later or to pass them on. The Atelier Badaboum teams share some essential tips to maximize their lifespan.
Choose quality clothing
Even before discussing maintenance, the quality of materials is paramount. Opt for resistant and well-sewn fabrics, prioritize natural materials and check the finishes (reinforced seams, well-attached buttons).
At Atelier Badaboum, each garment is designed to last and have multiple lives. We rigorously select our materials, emphasizing their quality, such as our 100% natural cotton. Our meticulous finishes ensure a perfect fit, wash after wash (we know you understand that…). Investing in well-designed pieces guarantees our customers a timeless, durable, and shareable wardrobe.
Wash with care: each material has its needs
Wool: preserving softness and warmth
- Washing: Always on a wool program or cold (less than 30°C) with a special wool detergent. Avoid spinning or use a very gentle spin.
- Drying: Flat on a towel to prevent distortion. No tumble dryer.
- Bonus tip: If pilling occurs, use a special wool comb to restore your favorite item to a like-new appearance.
100% cotton: easy care
- Washing: 30-40°C maximum to avoid premature wear. Wash colors separately.
- Drying: Avoid the tumble dryer which can cause shrinkage. Air dry.
- Bonus tip: Light ironing restores shape and flexibility to fibers after washing.
Corduroy: maintaining its original appearance
- Washing: Inside out, at 30°C, on a delicate cycle to avoid damaging the wales.
- Drying: No tumble dryer, lay flat to avoid wrinkles.
- Bonus tip: Gently brush with a soft-bristled brush to revive the corduroy.
For other materials in our collection, feel free to refer to the composition label. All information can also be found on our website, in the "Composition & Care" section.
Properly store clothes
- Careful folding: Avoid hanging wool or corduroy clothes to prevent deformation.
- Protected storage: Keep them in airtight boxes or cotton bags to prevent moisture and moths.
- Small lavender or cedar sachets: Perfect for repelling insects without chemicals.
Give worn-out clothes a second life
A hole in the knee? A missing button? Here are some tips to extend the life of clothes:
- Sew on a contrasting patch or fabric piece for a stylish and durable effect.
- Replace buttons and zippers rather than discarding a garment.
- Use the darning technique to repair a torn knit.
However, sometimes a garment is too damaged to be passed on or repaired. In this case, consider:
- Transforming it into accessories (bibs, wipes, soft toys).
- Personalizing it with embroidery or dye to hide wear.
- Recycling it by dropping it off at textile collection points.
Taking care of clothes from the first wash, storing them properly, and repairing them instead of throwing them away extends their lifespan. This not only promotes more responsible consumption (which is important to us at Atelier Badaboum), but also the passing down of clothes between siblings, cousins, or friends.
And you, what are your favorite tips for preserving your children's clothes? 😊
