First year with baby: choosing the right clothes
The first few months with a baby are full of new experiences, and choosing their outfits is one of the daily challenges. How do you choose the essential items for their wardrobe for each season? What clothes should you prioritize day and night, in summer and winter?
Here's a simple and comprehensive guide to help you dress your newborn during their first year, ensuring their well-being and comfort.
1. Dressing Baby in Summer: Lightness and Comfort Above All
In summer, heat can quickly become a challenge for a baby's comfort, especially during the first few months when they are still fragile and sensitive to temperature changes.
Daytime Outfits
Opt for light, breathable cotton clothing, a soft, natural material that allows the baby's skin to breathe. A short-sleeved or sleeveless bodysuit is often perfect for the hottest days. Complement with lightweight pants or bloomers to protect their legs, especially if you're going out. A wide-brimmed cap or hat is also essential to protect them from the sun, even in the shade.
Tip: Prioritize clothes that are easy to remove and light in color.
Nighttime Outfits
For summer nights, the key is to ensure the baby doesn't sweat excessively. If the room temperature is above 24°C, a simple short-sleeved bodysuit is sufficient. If the room is between 21°C and 24°C, a short-sleeved bodysuit with a lightweight sleep sack or summer swaddle is ideal to ensure comfortable sleep.
However, be wary of air-conditioned places that can make nights cooler. In this case, choose to dress your baby in thin cotton pajamas.
Tip: Pay attention to signs of heat in your baby (small red patches, sweating) and adjust their outfit accordingly. It's better to have one less layer than one too many!
2. Dressing Baby in Winter: Warmth and Softness for Cuddling
In winter, babies need more warmth, but always avoid overwhelming them with too many layers. It's important to know how to layer their clothes properly to insulate them from the cold without compromising their comfort.
Daytime Outfits
Layering is your ally in winter! Start with a long-sleeved cotton bodysuit to retain warmth. Add a small velvet, fleece, or soft wool sweatshirt or sweater, then finish with pants that don't restrict their movements. You can also choose a comfortable romper, making sure it can be easily put on. If you're going out, a warm snowsuit or a special baby down jacket is ideal.
Don't forget small accessories like a hat and booties. Baby's extremities are particularly sensitive to cold, so keeping their head and feet well covered is essential.
Tip: Check your baby's temperature by touching their neck or stomach. If these areas are warm, they are comfortable. Their hands may be a little cold, and that's normal!
Nighttime Outfits
For winter nights, a thicker sleep sack is perfect. Pair it with a long-sleeved cotton bodysuit and velvet pajamas for extra softness. However, be careful that the bodysuit is the right size so as not to compress the diaper. This will prevent you from finding your baby wet in the morning.
Tip: Never cover your baby with a blanket or duvet, as this poses a safety risk. If the room is below 18°C, you can choose a sleep sack with a higher TOG (thermal insulation rating) to ensure good thermal insulation. A well-fitting sleep sack is the ideal solution as it ensures a constant temperature all night long.
3. Adapt to Your Baby's Specific Needs
Every baby is different, and some may be more sensitive to cold, while others sweat quickly. Learn to observe your baby: when in doubt, it's better to check their neck or stomach to adjust their outfit.
Babies cannot yet regulate their temperature, and they have difficulty adapting to sudden changes. Therefore, when traveling, remember to bring spare clothes adapted to temperature variations.
4. Some Practical Daily Tips
- Prioritize practical clothing: Choose clothes that are easy to put on and take off, especially for nights when you may need to change them without fully waking them up.
- Opt for soft and natural materials: Materials like cotton or merino wool are ideal because they are soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic.
- Be attentive to your baby's signs of comfort: A comfortable and well-sleeping baby is generally dressed appropriately for their environment's temperature. Stay attentive to their behavior (discomfort, irritability, redness) to see if they are too hot or too cold.
Dressing your baby during their first year is primarily about learning to adapt to the seasons and their needs. With a few simple tips, you'll know how to keep them comfortable and warm – or cool – day and night.
And don't forget, a happy and serene baby is above all a baby who is comfortable in their clothes!
